This song was written and recorded by Joe Nichols in August 2005. It's getting a lot of play on country music stations, and I thought it cute and clever. At the time, I was playing with a drum sequencer (a computerized tool for creating drumming patterns) and decided this would be a fun song to experiment with.
While the original is standard country, mine evolved into something more exotic.
In an evening, I made up the drum part and recorded the guitar, bass, and vocals. When Zak heard it, he praised my rather simple bass line, and asked if he could try. He quickly recorded three versions. The first was a straightforward, reggae rock style, similar to mine, yet far better. Then he did a tapping version, with lots of slides and chords, and a funky slapping one. I listened to each and loved it. I couldn't decide which to use, or whether to splice parts of each together. Then I played all three of his bass lines together, simultaneously. I couldn't believe what it sounded like! It was a bass guitar orchestra, with richly varied textures and surging drive. We never planned it this way, yet it fit together magically. See what you think.
Mason says my drum part is weird, techno country with a bass drum obsession. Yeah, computers are dangerous toys.
